In 2015, Ian Seaton’s thirteen year-old granddaughter brought her question to him clutched to her chest like a dead pet and asked, “Crappa, what’s an abomination?” Over the following ten years, he sought an answer that would be honest, while giving his beloved granddaughter the courage to celebrate both her spiritual and sexual identities. This collection of poems documents that search.
Along the way, Ian shares an unflinching exploration of his own faith journey from Catholicism to Unitarian Universalism, a journey confronting conflicting urges for social justice and artistic integrity, a journey embracing a deeper, more visceral commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. These poems capture that journey: there will be change; there will be exposure of uncertainty, false starts, and confusion; there will be discovery. By accepting the invitation to touch the milestones of this journey, readers will have an opportunity to explore their own questions surrounding meaning and purpose.
